I also didn't know they wrote some software for Apple, go figure.
Microsoft and Apple were buddies back in the early days. Same goes for AMD and Intel. Intel actually subcontracted out some of its processor manufacturing to AMD.

Steve Jobs of Apple visits Microsoft to give a sneak preview of the revolutionary Macintosh computer. Microsoft becomes the first major company to develop products for the Mac.

Bill actually went to Apple. Begged to get a demo.... in his arrogance Steve Jobs gave him one........ Bill then stole the Xerox "Windows" OS that had been given to Apple.

mmm... its my understanding, Paul Allen co-founder of Microsoft bought their OS from Tim Patterson the creater of QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System) and developed a GUI for it.

anyways... some facts about Bill Gates:

1.Bill Gates earns US$250 every SECOND, that's about US$20 Million a DAY and US$7.8 Billion a YEAR!

2.If he drops a thousand dollar, he won't even bother to pick it up because the 4 seconds he picks it, he would've already earned it back.

3.The US national debt is about 5.62 trillion, if Bill Gates were to pay the debt by himself; he will finish it in less then 10 years.

4.He can donate US$15 to everyone on earth but still be left with US$5 Million for his pocket money.

5.Michael Jordan is the highest paid athlete in US. If he doesn't drink and eat, and keeps up his annual income i.e. US$30 Million, he'll have to wait for 277 years to become as rich as Bill Gates is now.

6.If Bill Gates was a country, he would be the 37th richest country on earth.

7.If you change all of Bill Gate's money to US$1 notes, you can make a road from the earth to moon, 14 times back and forth.
But you have to make that road non-stop ! for 1,400 years, and use a total of 713 BOEING 747 planes to transport all the money.

8.Bill Gates is 40 this year. If we assume that he will live for another 35 years, he has to spend US$6.78 Million per day to finish all his money before he goes to heaven.
Last but not the least : My Favorite........!!!

9.If Microsoft Windows users can claim US$1 for every time their computers hang because of Microsoft Windows, Bill Gates will be bankrupt in 3 years.

Hmmm didn't know that about Steve.

They stole it from Xerox? Really? hmmm

Bill seems to have taken the GUI from Xerox and later Apple, but not QDOS.
Meh, who knows, the guy is a filthy mofo because of all this.

This is old, Bill was born in '55, that makes him 51 years old now. ;)

Actually, the PARC system rights were bought by Steve Jobs and Apple Computer, abck in the late seventies. Xerox is still kicking itself in the head because of its belief way back when they said, who would ever want to use a mouse connected to a computer.

If I recall correctly, there was a deal regarding Quick basic and some other software between Apple and Microsoft and there was some technology in the form of code that was exchanged. Then, some say, that Microsoft capitolised on the cod eit received from Apple and they went and produced the first version of Windows. If memory serves me correctly, it was a spreadsheet program called Excel that both companies were working on this deal.

Anyway, both companies are friends once again, with Microsoft having helped Apple out of their finaincial woes back in 1996. The bottom line is that both platforms benefitted from all this, OMHO.

Microsoft - Apple, the real deal

there's a lot of misinformation in this thread, probably because it's all over the web inaccurately. I was involved in this (yes I'm an old fart computer geek) and here's the deal to make it clear :

Bill gates started out with a contract from IBM to make a version of BASIC that would run on their computers (in cartridge form, since floppies weren't invented yet). They were working on this when they got an opportunity to bid on a contract to create the whole operating system for the new home PC that IBM was developing. Microsoft bought the rights (i believe they bought the whole company actually) to QDOS, and modified it to what we know as DOS. About the same time, the Apple II was text based just like DOS, but Steve Jobs had an epiphany - he saw the Xerox mouse operated GUI at their PARC R&D facility. He knew immediately that the next apple had to have a mouse and GUI. So that's what they did. Meanwhile, Gates and co were getting rich off the DOS licenses (imho the stupidest business move ever, IBM giving gates the keys to the software billions) and looking to expand. Apple was a natural next move. Gates and Jobs met to discuss MS making software for the Apple like word, MS office etc. Gates saw the next generation point and click mouse interface while he was there, and then different people say different versions thanks to the lawsuits, but in all likelihood gates went back to Redmond and told his engineers to make a gui as close to apple's as possible. This turned into Windows, Apple sued, and the rest is history.

Little known fact - the original ms windows wasn't an operating system at all, it was envisioned as a program that sat on top of DOS and made navigation easier. so you still had a dos machine, then typed "win" to launch the windows browser. That was the source of most of the crappy functionality we still deal with today in windows - concessions that were made to cater to Dos's limitations.....

Ya i thought ibm and bill had some collaboration before.
That's the story i heard, Bill bought the rest of the rights to DOS, since IBM didn't see the bigger picture (of computers being in households).
They only saw them as Business Machines (hence the BM in their name).
Oh well, Bill did well, Steve's doing alright as well, just not as good as Bill. lol

Yeah, pretty much.

Pretty much up until 3.11 you Windows was launched after DOS (with the autoexec file). I remember always exiting Windows before shutting off my PC.
