Well got the new laptop up and running but time to install some anti-spyware...don't want any of Fred's cookies wandering around my computer!
What is the best system to go with? Is it a free download or do I have to buy? This would be in addition to Norton. Ideas?
Thanks.

Webroot spysweeper

I use Webroot spysweeper. It is great, updates on a daily basis for the new spyware. Caught plenty of spyware. Not free, costs about $30.00 per year.

If you have norton internet security suite you don't really need anything else. If I remember correctly, any other spyware removal tool will interfere with norton.....

But sybot search and desctroy worked for me until I bought norton....

Norton..while a very good product ends to be a huge CPU hog.

It's a very invasive program and it's often difficult to make it work the way you want it to.

Lot's of good spyware progrms out there. MS has there own free version that actually does quite a good job. It doesn't need to run resident in memory..you can run it once a week or month and you can get updates from MS every week.

I use ESET's NOD32, it has spyware built in with a very low foot print in memoruy which I like.

I use microsoft windows defender and ad-aware from lavasoft. Sometimes one does not catch and the other catches the spyware. Also windows defender does not delete cookies. So I use ccleaner to clean up cookies. All of them are free. I have never had a problem with spyware.

My favorite...

is PC-cillin. can be difficult to find. Got mine from FCS computers in Oakville. Also saw a copy at Wal-mart. Preder it over Norton and Macafee.

From your expeirence, is it better than Spybot S&D?
I use them both. In real-time, I run the Spybot S&D tea timer/ Immunize to block bad pages and the Javacool to block bad ActiveX/Java scripts and tracking cookies.

I then occassionally run Spybot S&D to catch anything that got missed.

I assume the footprint is small so it doesn't bog down the CPU? I would hate to use something like McAffee or Norton style program that bogs down CPU like there's no tomorrow.

The Spybot S&D tea timer takes 4MB of memory.

For Spyware Blaster, the only explaination I was able to find:

http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html
"SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed. SpywareBlaster is a non memory resident utility. It works by setting a "kill bit" for the CLSIDs of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the installation of any of them from a webpage."
