I would try to boot the computer in safe mode with networking, and try to run you anti virus software, or go to trend micro and run housecall

Papi is right with this tip. Every AV software out there will tell you in the mice type somewhere that you must run the AV software in safe mode to be comletely sure virus signatures etc are either deleted or quarantined.

Download NOD32 from ESET software..free 30 day trial. MS uses this on their servers around the world for protection. If you deide to buy it's cheaper than most and the support is fabulous if you run into problems. They either phone or email you within minutes. Again, even NOD32 reccomends it be run in safe mode to be 100% positive.

Virus

1. You must have an uptodate virus protection program
2. You need to download updates and run a scan daily
3. You need to identify the virus on your computer then go to the web site of your virus protection software and do a search to find the best method of removing the virus. Some virus can be removed or quarantined by the software. Others will require you to locate and delete specific lines in your startup or registry files.
4. If none of the above work I would
a) Get thee and thy computer to a repair shop ( Don't forget to bring $150.00 with you).
b) Start a new anti virus club
c) Pray
5. You might also try setting your internet start page to "blank page". You will find that in your tools, internet options, menu
6. You should also have pop-up and spware protection. Ad aware, SpyBot and two free programs. They should be run daily.

Hope some of this is helpful

Good post p man and about removing the virus, a lot of them these days have a built in anti-virus virus that prevents a lot of virus removal tools from removing them.

I remember when I built a new pc, and was using McAfee and before I could download the software I caught a virus. Even after installing McAfee it was still there and actually blocked McAfee from detecting more.

Thank god all I had on it was the O/S and IE. I eventually had to reformat the HD to remove all traces of the virus. Luckily it was one that could be removed this way, some actually imbed themselves in your bios and the only way to remove them is to remove the backup battery and erase your bios.

Useful resources

I recommend you checkout http://www.sysinternals.com/Forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1769&a for some good info as well as a number of free on-line scanning tools.

In particular, http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html might get you out of thie situation.

The other posters have some good advice wrt safe mode, booting from a clean disk, etc. If you are technically proficient (OK, a geek like me), you could google BART which will lead you to a page called "Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD". On it, you will find software and instructions on howto build a clean bootable CD to scan from.

Has Anyone Heard of This One?

If you receive a mail called "invitation", though sent by a friend, do not
open it and shut down computer immediately. This is the worst virus
announced by CNN, it has been classified by Microsoft as the most
destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and
there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys
the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

Doesn't matter dude. If norton or McAfee don't have a way to protect you against it the virus can still infect your computer as even though you seem to be viewing your emails online, they are infact downloaded to your pc...

Think of it this way: your tv receives a signal and the tv processes it so you can view it on the screen. That's the way your pc views things online.

I saw one like that a year or more ago. Part of the problem is that this little creature creates a new file, then modifies the registry to point to the new file. Here's how I fixed it:

1. Find out the name of the virus. You might have to scan the hard drive to do this. If your AV software is out of date you can use Trend Micro's 'HouseCall" from their website at http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/personal.htm.

2. Once you know the name of the virus, go back to the Trend Micro site and do a search on it. You will find specific information on how to remove it from that site.

HouseCall will do a really good scan and will remove a virus from your system, but it will not be in memory and block new viruses, so you need to get a good AV software and keep it up-to-date. The new versions of most good AV software come with a 1 year subscription to keep it up-to-date automatically.

You might also want to get some anti-spyware software. Ad-Aware se AND Spybot Search & Destory 1.4 are both available from www.download.com for free.

If you go to the Trend Micro site http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/personal.htm and type 'invitation' into the search panel, you'll find that this particular item is one of about 16,000 hoaxes that are spread by email. One of the objectives of a hoax is to get everybody emailing all their friends about it and clog the mail servers. Read all about it.
