Past few days, haven't been able to access newsgroups through sympatico. There are posts from some 3rd party group saying bell is no longer providing usenet and you should sign up with them but their credibility seems low and Bell's site says nothing about it. Any clue what is going on?

Apparently, Bell feels that newsgroups are no longer necessary because of the rise of IM software. That is the official line.

The reality is that they are just bloodsucking more money for less service.

Updated information

Pissed that Bell has just raised the price of HSE, but has cut back on service by getting rid of usenet?

Phone the sympatico business off and vent your anger at such a terrible management decision.

Tell them that you will only continue if the reduce your monthly to $34.95.

Initially, they will tell you that you need to have a 1 year contract, but if you stay firm, they will relent and drop your price to the $34.95/month, a $120 per year savings!

A year from now, remember to call them back and thank them for the half hour incall session they bought for you. That should confuse them

Great marketing twist indeed

Comprimised has a great suggestion. What an excellent way you have of summarizing the economics of saving by complaining with Bell.

I think this could be spun by marketing with a great twist... "Stay with us - even if you complain, you'll still get F**ked with Bell!"

Well, truth be known, Bell is only one of the national telcos to discontinue Usenet services... Sprint Canada/Rogers has as well, and it's on the books for Telus and MTS/Allstream.

The reasoning is that usenet is used mainly for the transmission of copywrited software and pornographic images. Most importantly though, it is also used to transmit child pornography (which is illegal in Canada) and is impossible to police on the Usenet. So, in discontinuing the service, customers do not really lose access to anything they previously had, and it curbs the child porn file sharing.

And no, I don't work for Bell. lol

Really? Someone should really get in touch with Microsoft then, to let them know that their dozens of NG are actually being used for smut. And someone should let various universities know that they can no longer use the NG for course material.

Sure, there is abuse of usenet, but there is abuse of every technology. Are you demanding that cell phones be banned because a few people take up skirt picts with them?

No, I don't think technology should be banned, or even limited. Upskirt shots, or even hidden webcams and the lot are one issue.. they invade our privacy and civil liberties. If we get caught, we are charged and bad things happen to us. Child porn is entirely different.. it's exploiting children. We're not talking 16 or 18year olds here, but pre-pubescent boys and girls. If doing away with Usenet helps protect children from abuse, I'm all for it. Anything that makes getting child porn more difficult is a step in the right direction. Sure, there are other ways to get it, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't, as responsible adults take and support what measures we can to protect our children.

You'll notice that the "Internet" or its providers have never made a move to stop or censor other types of traffic. Software piracy runs rampant, software companies scream for a solution, but essentially it's up the the developer to "catch" someone using pirated software, and take legal action. The same is said for music. Even other things that are illegal in Canada, beastiality for example, remain untouched by the Internet providers.

Child pornography is different. It's practiced by a group of individuals who share their exploits (through pics and movies) over various mediums.. Usenet, the web, email. There is no governing body for those, and it is left to independant "child watch" groups to protect the children. Where Usenet is concerned, it is extremely easy to anonymize the source of material, so one can fearlessly post anything without a reasonable expectation of getting caught. So, with such an easy tool to spread child pornography, not only do Internet providers facilitate the transfer of this material, but in a way, also encourage it.

Usenet is an old, antiquated technology which is very resource intensive, and really redundant in this day and age. There are so many other options that fill the same space as Usenet.. P2P networks for your smut and illegal software/music enjoyment, Yahoo and other groups for specific topic discussion, etc.

Is having Usenet really worth the damage and emotional scarring it causes to these abused children?

My understanding is that many of these criminals drive cars, have VISA Cards, use IBM compatable computers and drink water.

Are you suggesting that all cars be banned, anyone that uses a Visa should be arrested on suspicion of child porn, and anyone using a PC should be imprisioned and that anyone that drinks water should be immediately forced to get sex therapy?

Your arguement is completely specious.

*sigh* You win.. your argument is much more rational than mine. Call up Bell and tell them that you pay the immense sum of $50/month for your internet service, and your simply subscribing to another Usenet news server is just too much effort.

And while you're at it, give MicroSoft a call and tell them you want your DOS and Windows 3.0 back.

I'm out.

Actually when Rogers dropped it i noticed a discount on my service. Now where can we go to get free usernet? I found giganews good but a bit pricey.
Any suggestions?
