I have an old Pentium 2 with a floppy disc and read only CD. It has no such thing as USB ports...not invented then, it operates on Windows 95..and there is no internet connect.
My problem...I was about clean out all the files and dump the computer when I realized there are a large number of business files still marginally within the period that the tax dept. can ask for....so I need to save these files.
I would like to get rid of the computer but how do I save the files apart from laboriously copying onto floppies that my new computer can't read!
Any suggestions on how to copy or transfer files? Or do I just have to file the computer away in a basement for another 5 years?
Many thanks

Assuming you do not want to buy any thing to help you do the transfer, I would suggest taking the hard drive out of the old computer and temporarily put it in your new computer (I assume you have a new computer)

if they are just text files, you won't need too many floppy's, save them on the floppy and if you ever need them you can buy the drive then.

Pretty much all computers can take multiple hard drives via IDE cables. Why don't you simply remove the the hard drive from the Windows 95 system and connect it via IDE cable to your new computer. Once you do this your new system will see the old hard drive and allow you to drag and drop the files onto your new computer. You may even want to keep the old hard drive on the new system for additional storage (just format it in Windows disk management utility). The only thing to really worry about when doing this is changing the jumper on the back of your old hard drive to slave since your new system would be the master. This whole operation should take no more than 10 minutes and requires a screwdriver.

my 1st choice would be to compile all your files into a master file called something that you can easily recognize like "Old files" , yank the HD from old machine and install it into new machine as a slave drive, then drag the file over to the new hard drive (asuming the new amchine is IDE & not SATA) then burn the file to cd or dvd for backup

2nd choice would be to buy a chap cd burner (with software) (under $20), installed into old machine & burn all the files to cd

3rd choice, see what a place like Staples or any computer repair place would charge to copy files to CD or DVD

Many thanks for the suggestions. I think I will pull the hard drive and store it until my computer friend can hook it into the new machine for me and allow me to move the files I need.
Unless CRA come after me for the records there may not be any immediate need to move the files.
Knew I could count on you guys for help.
Merci beaucoup

If you can connect the old computer to the Internet briefly, collect all of the files you want to save, compress them to a .rar or .zip archive, and upload them to yourself using http://www.yousendit.com

The file will be available for download for seven days or a maximum of 25 downloads. As long as you don't share the download link with someone else, only you will have access to it. You could also download it yourself 25 times in a row, if you want to be sure. yousendit has free registration, and can handle files up to 100 MB.

Reboot hold down the "T" key and your old computer becomes an external drive plug into the new computer and drag your files across...... oh you are not on a Mac ....... hmmmm take the drive out make t a slave and reboot ......check with the manufacture for drive slave configuration of your jumpers.
