I rarely make the upgrade to new versions of software (especially beta) unless there is a significant change/improvement. However, I just had to try the new Opera (my browser of choice) because of its torrent feature. I haven't been using torrent simply because I was too lazy to figure it out.

I just started to use it and all it takes is to go to a torrent site and click on the file's link. Can it get any easier? That's only somewhat of a rhetorical question as I haven't done it any other way. My only p2p experience has been with grokster, emule, etc.

Are there particular torrent sites that are better than others? Is that how it works or is there a single source that draws from many others?

demonoid is great, but you have to wait to sign up AND, if you dont seed, others will cut you off from downloading.
They can see your stats in terms of downloading(leeching) and uploading(seeding).

Been experimenting with bittorrent some.
It reminds me of the now defunct AudioGalaxy which was great back in the day, better than Napster, Kazaa and all the other p2ps rolled together.
Been using the Bit Comet client which lists many torrent sites.

http://thepiratebay.org has a great selection and works fairly well and you don't have to sign up and wait to use it and this site has everything you may want.

I haven't tried demonoid, or any private torrent site yet, but my understanding is that these private sites are better because their policy to kick out people who leech but don't seed makes it so that download speeds are higher.

Public torrent sites suck. For example, right now I'm getting the complete Battlestar Galactica off of one site, it's a 10.5 Gb download and my average DL is 70 kB/s, top speed I've seen was 150 kB/s. This torrent has a terrible DL/UL ratio. Before I found out how to tweak to get even that much all I got was 20 kB/s. There is no point in torrenting if that's all you get! Speeds of 200-300 kB/s should be possible. The general torrent population don't know how to tweak their systems to get top speeds, and worse, don't seed! It makes torrenting suck for all of us.

Let me say it again: there is no point in torrenting if all you get is 20-30 kB/s DL speed. Torrenting is supposed to be faster and more efficient than just directly downloading the whole file (at 128 kB/s) from a website rather than a torrent. If you are not getting better than 128 kB/s stop wasting everyone's time.

People, learn to tweak your systems, and seed your files!

Demonoid is good but get into 'newsgroups', they are even better.
There is a thread on newsgroups on TERB. Check it out.

It's a nice feature of Opera and D/L speeds vary quite a bit.
Downloaded an album last week where the Opera torrent feature actually went faster than the Bit Comet client usually used.

I use Opera all the time and find it more stable than Firefox and apart from the torrent integration I like the session saving feature.
Also use Opera all the time and think it's the best.
However on my new laptop Opera is not very stable at all and may have to use Firefox instead. Not sure where the problem lies and if it is due to Vista, the AMD processor or Toshiba.
Opera has plenty of neat features lacking in IE or FF.
