So i am helping a client in the Lawrence and Avenue Rd area that is looking for a new ISP and have been dealing with All Stream and Bell...... both will need to dig a trench to bring fibre to their building and require 16 to 24 monthes and a trench to be dug across of Avenue Rd. So a permit from the city to shut down Avenue Rd for 2 weeks........ aprox 75 000 to be charged to the client....guaranteed 10 meg to the main drop closet.
Hydro comes along proposes they can do it in 6 monthes all the conduits are in place and can guarantee 50 to 100 megs to drop closet with a 3 year contract and the same price as what they are paying for 3 megs now from All Stream........

We've delt with one of the other Hydro telecoms and found the same. They're hungry for business. They pulled more than 5 miles of fibre and connected up in less than 2 weeks, including "trenching" under a major roadway.

They don't actually dig a trench as they have directional drills. They just drill under the road and push a new conduit through to carry the fibre.

It took longer to deal with the lawyers (3-4 weeks) on the contract itself than it did to get hooked up.

The only thing you need to watch is that the Hydros (at that time) were really Tier 2 ISPs in that they are reselling bandwidth from other Tier 1 ISPs. Don't know if that's still the case. (i.e. what are thier peering agreements with other major ISPs ?)

It depends on the kind of ISP reliability your client is after. From a physical connection point of view, the Hydro level of services are way ahead of Bell or Allstream. Haven't had to deal with them on any ISP type issues yet though.

It is just a matter of time before the hydro companies are an ISP.. BPL (broadband over powerlines) is not far off!
