If you happen to be running a "backup" version of Windows XP, watch out for the latest Microsfot update. The latest update will install a validation tool on your computer that basically annoys the hell out of you and pops up with reminders to purchase genuine versions of Windows.

Previous hacks for this (like disabling ActiveX, etc) aren't working. Anyone seen or heard of new "fixes" for this? I've searched around a bit but can't find anything yet

Remove the problem:

Then change your updates to pick which ones you want to install and
never install KB905474 again.

Ahhhh yes, if you need IE7 -> plan B

FORK OUT THE FUCKING $175.

When you pirate software you may have to make some sacrifices. That’s life in the big city.

It depends if one wants to use IE7 ( heard its a copy of FF?). There's lots of users who use alternate browsers.

I got rid of that annoying apopup/alert by using Windows.Genuine.Advantage.Validation.v1.5.526.0.CRACKED-ETH0 ( involves replacing 1 DLL file)

Many reviews state that it outperforms FF.. Having used FF for the last 2 years, I think IE7 is a better browser

I did when I bought the laptop, but when my hard drive crashed the key didn't work (it's a Toshiba laptop from a legit dealer, so its a legit key). Had to wait over an hour with Microsoft to get this resolved, so when I reformatted I didn't want to waste my time again...looks like I'm going to have to though

Microsoft seldom produces Best of Breed software. Deep pocket marketing and monopoly status drive most of their sales. They do have their shit together here though, great product.

There is a .DLL hack that works quite well, or you can always just use an unblocked key to activate it. However, the best solution is to simply buy a copy of XP. It may cost a bit now but it's a lot easier in the long run.

The problem with IE is not the performance it is how it is so much part of the system that a with security flaw your whole system becomes vulnerable...... biggest problem with Windows is the way it is developed with one hand not knowing what the other is working on.

I just sat through a conference call with a Vista Developer in Cork, Ireland.... Vista is being designed to only authenticate if not locally to a AD Server.... no LDAP or Novell, Open Directory. Apparently MS will not be supporting any modules.

OEM versions run from $140 - $175
logic computer house at dixie and dundas.
You do, however have to buy a hard drive.
I'm sure you cheapos have spent money on more frivolous shit.
ie - dances? mpa? sp's?...best one of all, cigarettes.
If you smoke and spend money on that garbage, you need to get your shit together as well as your priorities.
Buy it, and keep it for life, no headaches and upates without the hassle.

I think it is at Kennedy Computers (near kennedy & orenda) in Brampton, they would sell a dead hard drive for $10 with an OEM copy of Windows

I just discovered that the DLL hack doesn't work on Windows Media Center 2005. This sucks as I actually got MCE with my new computer but lost it in a crash. I downloaded a new copy but it won't accept the key from my original OEM version. The manufacturer wants $100 for new discs.
