I download a 700mb movie and burn it to a cd, slap it in my TV's DVD player and start watching. Sometimes about an hour in the playback stops and picture freezes.
The file is mpeg3, the cd is obviously compatible with the player if it goes for an hour. So why does the movie not run through smoothly?

I'm assuming the media you're using are good enough for the file size? Some media are only good for about 650Meg. And since the MPEG-3 standard was obsoleted (MPEG-2 is used instead, and MP3 is actually MPEG-1, (Audio) layer 3), it seems clear that the DVD player is using the metainformation embedded in the file, rather than the filetype, to determine the format to play.

It would be useful to know what the actual encoding rate is, and whether that 700Meg file actually has the full movie, or if it itself is truncated to about an hour. 700Meg wouldn't be out of line for an hour of MPEG-1 video at 1.5Mb/s.
