Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
Anyone have any feedback on Dell computers? I'm looking for a basic entry level, and priced one on the website. It was about $750(including 17" LCD) with tax and shipping. What's the reliability and quality? I know some people don't like the fact that the video card etc. are "on board". Thanks.

Dell computers at the low end are the best around. Even if you knew how to build one you couldn't do it from parts for that price. Also Dell uses only new things not used parts like some of the local discounters.

never buy a desktop from a large manufacturer (dell, hp, compaq, gateway etc), they always rip you off on parts. goto www.canadacomputers.com and you can get a very good desktop for half the price.
only goto large manufacturers for stuff like laptops.
the reasoning is that a desktop is made from off the shelf parts, you can buy them separatly, put them together and save 400 easy. if you get them as a set system they almost always add OEM (licensed replicas) parts and the general build quality is horrible. plus they try to tack on stupid things like to the door service for an extra 300 or anti-virus for an extra 150.
if u have any more q's pm me, i'll guide you through the process.

If you know what you're doing, sure. If someone doesn't really know what they're doing, you can't go wrong with a Dell. Just make sure you get the extra warranty; you get much better tech support with it.

I bought a Dell laptop in January and the most important thing for me was the warranty. Theirs is the best.
I would reccommend Dell without hesitation. If you know what you are doing then you can build one otherwise Dell is the answer I would choose.

Not related to Dell but a bit of advice if anyone offers you a Gateway for a Too Good to be True price. Buyer beware, the Toronto Police service website says that 330 out of 400 stolen in early April are still out there. They have a guy from thornhill in custody for the 70 . they post a photo of the type and give its model number.

Pick Dell only if you are relatively new to computers, and will require their support line. Your primary usage should be email and web surfing.

Dell keeps prices down by offering packages consisting of older technology hardware. To run games or photo editing applications, you need to upgrade the memory and video card. So additional cost.

Be prepared for some bad pixels on any new LCD monitor from Dell, even the upgrade digital models. They sell the "not exactly perfect" displays from the manufacturers.

I purcased a Dell desk top package not quite a year ago and have been really happy with it except for two things, you can't just walk out and get an ink cartridge for your dell printer, if you want a new one you have to buy it from dell, they can be refilled a limited number of times from someone like Island Inkjet tho. Secondly `my 17" moniter is not clear it has a fuzziness to the words and we can't seem to clear it up no matter what we do, annoying more than anything.

Try setting your desktop display size to the native resolution of the monitor. This is especially pertinent with LCD monitors. For example, a 17" LCD monitor may have an actual display resolution of 1280x768, but your windows display is set to 800x600. You will have a much sharper image if you set the Windows display to match @ 1280x768.

If you find the print too small, just increase the font size. There is an option for font size in your browser.

Not being totally computer literate, where do I go to set the windows display?

Bought my kid a Dell laptop for University-very happy with it, no problems after two years and very high usage.
I bought a Toshiba for myself (reasonable price with rebate.) Absolutely terrible, it crashes every two months or so and I have to use the recovery disc, loosing all my saved stuff. Plus they screwed me on the rebate. I'd buy a Dell for myself the next time.

That's unusual. Toshiba together with IBM (Lenovo) has one of the highest ratings for Laptops.
