I have an iPod Nano 4 Gigs.

Apple Nano uses AAC encoding (Advanced Audio Coding) to import music from CD's, and then download the files into the Nano. AAC is similar to MP3, maybe slightly better and takes less space than MP3, but is not compatible with MP3.

Itunes also lets you import the music in MP3 coding, to download in CD, wich is what I want to do to create MP3 disks to play in a car radio.

My question is: Can I have 2 separates libraries, one used to import AAC files, and the other one to import MP3 files. This would allow me to download in either my Nano iPod, or make a CD (or both) without having to recreate a library each time.

So far all my attempts to do that have been unsuccessful.

If I understand your situation correctly, you want to have 2 copies of each song, one in AAC format in one library and the other in MP3 format in the second library. This has the negative of using twice the space. The only positive is that you can have the smaller AAC files on your nano (for the same quality) which will allow you to put more songs on the portable player.

I think you may have a misunderstanding. You can rip CDs in itunes in both AAC and MP3 format. AAC is the default and does produce better quality for the same file size. However, there is an option that lets you select other encodings (including mp3) when you rip (transfer) the song from the CD to your library.

Since you want mp3 format to put on CDs for your car, I think you just should encode all your songs in that format because it will work on your ipod. If the quality of the encoded song is an issue, you can increase the bitrate of the mp3 encoding (at the cost of larger file size). If the file size is an issue decrease the bitrate when you rip from the CD.

I have resolved the problem by creating 2 Smartlists, one AAC the other MP3. All imported songs are listed in the library with an indication in the "Kind" column of the format selected, i.e. AAC Audio files or MPEG Audio files.

The Smartlists automatically select either one, and group them accordingly, making it easy to choose the files I want to download in either the Nanod or mp3 burner.

jpf, There was no misunderstanding as to the capability of iTunes to import and rip. My thread clearly indicates that. The question was how to create separate libraries.

The space you mentioned is only HD space. Not important.

My apologies. I am the one who doesn't understand what your problem was. I'm glad that you have resolved it.

Here is 2 questions for you guys.... Do you have to use Itunes for software and when you connect the Ipod does it send your serial to Apple? A buddy of mine has a hot iPod and is wondering that before he plugs it in... Any input?

An offshoot of his question...we have an iPod shuffle. It can only be synched with one PC which is currently our home office desktop. We want to put the same music on our two laptops but the iTunes s/w only allows you to synch one PC.

Is there any other software that allows you to do this? I downloaded Songbird from the link in the Top 50 thread but it doesn't seem to be the answer. I cannot even get it to recognize the Shuffle and I did install the iTunes plugin.

I think our next device will just be a good MP3 player. iPod is a pain in the ass IMO.

I use MediaMonkey. Its simply the best app out there in my opinion. You can copy to/from any mp3 player including ipod/iphone withouth syncing your whole library.

You can create amazing playlists since it uses an internal SQL database.

The free version has limited capabilities, I actually paid to get a lifetime licence cause... its just damn worth it.

The thing I love the most about it, is that it fully respects the mp3 id3 tag format. What this means, is that when you update the songs with album art, ratings, etc... the data is stored in the mp3 file and not in some stupid proprietary database as itunes does. It also has great tools for tagging and fetching artwork from the internet...

And the support is just awesome. Its forum based and I've never seen an issue go unanswered for more than 10 minutes lol

If you're using an Apple player (as I do) You'll still need itunes for fetching firmware updates and copying videos if your unit handles it. Just make sure to disable all the auto-sync stuff (there are plenty of docs and how-tos).

I've been using it flawlessly for the past 1.5 years. It just rocks.
