Between here and there.
One of my computers can't connect to the internet for some reason. Any suggestions or leads is appreciated.

I have Rogers Express Hi-Speed service at home. The problem is this; my laptop (Dell Latitude D600 w/Centrino, XP Professional OS, Service Pack 2 installed) will connect automatically to the internet through the Rogers modem without problem. However, my desktop (P4 chip, XP Professional OS, Service Pack 2 installed) will not connect through the same portal. I have installed a new Syslink ethernet card in the desktop. The Network Connections Status indicates that the computer is "connected" and the connection speed is "100.00Mbps" but the Activity Packets indicates "0" received. The computer is set to obtain the IP address automatically. So why is the internet connection ok but the computer still won't allow me to "connect"? Is there some setting I'm missing? If so, which and how do I set it?

Let me know if additional info is required to help me solve my problem.

Thanks all in advance.

Sounds as if you have either a bad modem or dad cable connection.

I am figuring you were able to connect before with the same desk top and modem

Follow what Mikron said.

Your IP address assignment is based on your network card's MAC address. A MAC is a unique number assigned to every NIC card.

The IP is "leased' to the MAC address for a period of time, (usually 2 to 7 days). During that time the IP address is reserved for the specific combination of the cable modem and NIC cards MAC address.

So, when you switch computers, without telling the IP provisioning server to stop reserving your present IP, you wont get a connection, as the network has given that cable modem only one IP, and it only works for a specific MAC.

If you tell the IP provisioning server to stop reserving the IP <ipconfig /release> before disconnecting the first PC, the modem will be ready for a new IP assignment.

For some cable modem models and systems, a reboot may speed up the process.
