Hi guys and girls,

I'm working on my parent's computer and is there a way, without opening the box, to;

a) figure oput how many DIMM slots this motherboard has?
b) what DIMMs are required?
c) what DIMMs are currently installed

Thanks for your help.

Holy shit, that's a hot little app....gives you everything you need to overclock your puter....thanks dude!

BTW Superq, if you're thinking of upgrading the memory etc make sure you get exactly what the mainboard needs or the same type as what you have. If you buy the wrong chips your PC won't boot up and you can't take em back.

If you're looking to upgrade your ram you can also go to the mainboard mfg site and see what you can run in it. That app tells you something about the memory re: the mainboard but I don't know if that info is what you have in there, or what it can take......

That's awesome! Thanks Albertp. CPUI-Z tells me that I have 4 slots with one 256MB chip in the first slot. I'm guessing that the speed is 133mhz. Can put in one PC133 512MB chip or do I have to pair the one already there with another 256MB chip? They shouldn't need more than 512MB. I thought 256MB might be enough but with Vista coming...

They only have a Celeron based on an ASUS motherboard but it does what they need it to do. Email, Internet, Basic stuff. I'll check the ASUS website and see if they have anything to add.

Thanks again,

SQ

If you go to either Crucial or Kingston site they can tell you what ram is needed for the motherboard. The price diff isn't that
much between 256 and 512.If your running xp pro 768ram is a sweet spot. Check with the place you buy the ram
to see if you can return it.

Just a quick word about vista. Downloaded longhorn beta2(vista),
looks neat but,
1. uncompressed it was 2.8gbs
2. minimum 7 gig free space, only ntfs.
3 installed on p3 866 with 256 ram, ran like a pos, real slow.

I think the requirements - realistically - will be p4/highend AMD (my choice) 2ghz processor with 1gig of ram.

Looks pretty interesting though.

and your point is...?
I think his point was that you don't have to worry about upgrading your computer as quickly to run vista as the emergency is no longer there.....

It's probably cheaper to add another 256 MB stick of RAM.
I think Vista will demand a better graphics card as well, so the increased RAM won't help.

Ummm yes it will.....if vista requires more ram AND a better graphics card, how won't increasing his ram help?

And depending on the current pricing, a 256 chip should be cheaper than a buying a 512 chip but you have to watch, some ram pricing is whacked....

Just a side note: You should check the specs on your MOBO before adding a 512 chip, some won't let you run odd banks like that....(1 256 in slot 1 and 1 512 in slot 3)

If you are really adventurous you could effectively:
Bank 1 256 mb (existing)
Bank 2 256 mb (new)
Bank 3 512 mb (new)
Bank 4

But like I said, first check with the mobo manufacturer, they might not let you run a single ram chip like the above. I know my ASUS P4PSE won't...

I thought that the only upgrade he was doing was increasing his RAM. What I meant was that, this alone won't help him run Vista.
