LG plasma - legalities/return policy of floor model - [update- exchanged for panny]

I just purchased a 50" LG DU-50PX10 at 2001 Audio/Video.

I went there with the intention of possibly getting a JVC 52" rear projection with 3 chip LCOS ( not sure of exact model)

Anyway, the JVC would have been my choice, but for only $500 more at $3100 + tax I figured it might be time to take the leap to plasma even if it's not one of the top plasma contenders.

At this point I'm not "locked in", so if anyone has any reason why I should pull the plug on this deal [aside from the fact I can't really afford it] or can assure me it's a good choice please let me know as it's being delivered tomorrow night.

thanks.

PS I know, I just bought a 36" WS panasonic tau just over 2 years ago, but it just doesn't cut it, size wise, for true widescreen DVD or even [my pet peave ]anamorphic 16:9 for that matter

LG makes a great TV now, if I had a choice between a JVC 50" plasma and a LG 50" Plasma, and the JVC was $500.00 cheaper, I would buy the LG. LG has come a long way and their TV's are great. It's no longer that cheap crap from Canadian Tire.

Dude: if you can't really afford it why buy it? I mean really, it is a great toy, and the image must be stunning, but you can get a similar image for a lot less money. That is, unless you're going for the WOW factor when chicks walk in your place...

Anyhow, for comparison, a few years ago (about 8) I purchased 2 42" sony plasmas for a company I was working for. We paid $12,000.00 each (great deal at the time) and they a) were only 42" b) 800 x 600 or EDTV. SO your 50" is a steal at $3100.00

I would tell you to return it for a Pansonic Plasma but since you can't really afford the LG, the Panasonic is more. Panasonic are the leaders in plasma TV's. Best bang for the buck. When I was TV shopping I had the LG and Panasonic plasma's set up side by side in my home. Each one was calibrated and supplied the same HD feed. The Panasonic blew the LG away. It wasn't even close in picture quality. The LG on its own before I hooked up the Panasonic disappointed me. The Pansonic is more $$ but woth it. Toshiba, HP and Maxent are also close to the Panasonic in picture quality because they use Panasonic's glass and are also cheaper. I think Hitachi also makes a nice plasma.
I don't think the LG is a good enough TV compare to other choices and since you can't afford it, it makes it an even worst TV. Save your $$. Then again, I wouldn't waste my $$ on a RPTV but that's just me. Picture quality is most important to me. You have to decide what is more important to you.

You should check out the Panasonic 42" EDTV plasma. Most people can't tell the difference between it and it's HDTV bigger brother. Plus it has better picture quality than most other brands HDTV's. This is probably the best TV out there righ now for the money. I had this TV before upgrading to the HD version. It's amazing and only $2800 at most stores.
Also, I found the salesmen at 2001 A/V really push the LG. Research T's on line and don't believe anything you hear from these salemen.

Edit:
Sorry, I assumed the LG was a 42" at that price. $3100 for a 50" is a great price. It's probably an older floor model right? If you're happy with it then keep it.

Go to www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com. They rate both the 42" and the 50" Panasonic as #1.
I had a look around the site and there's a lot of good info there. However, I have to point out that that their "top ten" and "top five" are based on sales, not on their evaluation of quality or "bang for your buck".

I have been interested in the Panasonic as well.

What is it like on non-HD stations? (I have HD but don't limit myself to those stations).

Thanks.

Good Choice

I have a LG 42" HD PLasma for almost 2 years (paid almost $5k) and absolutely love it. It's main selling feature was the warranty, it was the only major brand to offer a 2 year warranty.

The price you paid is amazing. Enjoy it.

That's because most people buy HDTVs and brag about it but don't realize they are NOT watching HD.....I think the percentage was up around 80% of HD owners don't have it hooked up properly.....

BTW: the "qulaity" of a picture or image is relative. Whether one buys a panasonic EDTV, rear projection, LCD rear projection, plasma, CRT or whatever the only thing that matters is if YOU the owner like the image. Allthe stats, comparisons, buyer guides etc don't mean squat if you don't like the image of the model they reccommend.

MY advice to the original poster still stands as well as this: If you can, take it home, hook it up, and if they have an x number of days return policy, if you don't like it then send it back. If you do like it, pat yourself on the back and say you got a great deal on an incredible monitor.....cause $3100 for a 50" is an amazing deal.

As it turns out, it is : (

I assumed it was an older model, but as far as I can recall, at no time was it mentioned to me that it was a floor model. Obviously they were not wanting to draw attention to this fact either way, or it would have put an entirely different spin on things while I was weighing the pros and cons out at the time. I'd have to be mentally hampered to knowingly buy a "torched" floor model plasma which more than likely wasn't given anything resembling a proper break in period to begin with. In retrospect, I should have questioned it and the fact that I wasn't "pressured" to get the infamous extended warranty should have set off a red light.

So, it arrives - I turn the thing on and within minutes I notice that there seems to be a difference in color between the center pixels and those around the edges ( first bell ) ... a moment later I notice what at first appears to be a mark on the bottom left corner of the screen. Upon closer inspection I discover it reads "DISCOVERY HD" ... you fuckin bastards - it's a temporary or permanent "burn in" and obviously has been used. I get on the phone. Of course they insist it was mentioned that it was a floor model and try to brush off this fact with "of course it's a floor model at that price" attitude accompanied by that condescending "eheheh" that just makes ya wanna ... eeergh. Maybe I should have questioned the price, but it's been two years since I investigated plasmas and I always thought of LG as the good, but not great brand.

Anyway, after the initial slightly heated exchange on the phone with the manager and getting nowhere with asking for a refund or immediate exchange, in part due to the fact that I was going to attempt to remove the burn in using the 'whitewash' feature [which I did manage to some degree] and him "appeasing me" with the proposition that if I'm not happy with it after a few weeks they'll exchange it and work something out for a panny [at double the price] ... but there's no current LG 50" plasma so the one I saw in the store must have been an illusion ... where the fuck do they get these people.

OK, so the burn in was minimized to some degree and the picture is "nice" as long as I don't compare it to my CRT or scrutinize too much.

So, the next night I'm watching a DVD and I notice an intermittent flickering in dark areas - as if the brightness is jumping between settings ( lowering the brightness to abt 25 almost eliminates the problem). Back on the phone - me : blah blah blah ... them :blah blah blah ... in essence they say to phone the technician they deal with who is an "authorized" LG techy or some shit to that effect - implicating that any repairs needed will be free of charge. In the time before I finally get hold of the "technician" I notice sparkles on the screen that appear green at first, but upon inspection are red, green and blue - they appear wherever there is motion - as if not all the pixels are keeping up with the change in movement. It's like watching everything in bloody 'never never land'.

meh ... the tech dude's over the phone analysis concludes that the flickering and the sparkles are a "known software issue" (oh boy) and he's waiting to hear back from LG as to how to rectify the problem with an "upgrade" and "he will call me".

yeah, I'm being given the run-around. I've never liked [mass market electronics] salesman in general and trust them abt as much as I do an addict, but in this case it was dulled intuition on my part in regard to what was not said. Yeah, I fucked up.

There are features that I actually love about this TV though - zoom options suit me better than the Panasonic's, as the horizontal option gives a more true looking widescreen - I also prefer it on "low power setting" because it looks less "cartoonish". I detest the way they set these things up in stores. I'm relatively sure I'd be happy with the TV had it been a brand spanking new set and I could justify paying off the CC.

I also notice other odd artifacts such as, what appears to be, polarization ( as if the bitrate is too low or something - who knows) The temporary burn in/ghosting is very evident overall - I'm not sure if this is exaggerated due to aging pixels or if it's as extreme with with new sets as well - overall I could learn to live with this, but am under the impression Panasonic have reduced this problem, inherent to plasma technology, considerably.

Right now, between this & that, I'm just tired and frustrated ... just thought I'd update you all given that you took the time to share your input ... at present I'm wishing I took tboy's advice and just stuck with my CRT for a while longer - I'm not sure I'd be satisfied with a rear projection after experiencing plasma even with all it's possible faults - I could be wrong, but I could also just be nuts .. I'm leaning toward the latter in more ways than one.

Dude< for that kind of money take it back and don't take no for an answer...if you're having these problems now, wait until you've had it a month or so, what's going to happen then? Or how about next spring? The thing most likely will be toast by then and guess what? THEY WON"T DO A THING FOR YOU

Take it back, take it back TAKE IT BACK....and if they don't give you your money back, take em to court immediately.

BTW: on your bill does it say anywhere that it was a floor model? If it doesn't you are good to go, they cannot refuse to take it back. If it does, you're pretty much cooked...

Also, now that we know it is a floor model, you can bet dollars to donuts that it was on at least 12 hrs a day, 7 days a week, for possibly more than a year....

Re : TAKE IT BACK !!!

I think I hear what you're saying, tboy ... there's no doubt it's probably used up a good part of it's lifespan already and they are likely just stalling me until the 30 day return/exchange limit is up.

I already tried mentioning there is no indication of it being a floor model on the receipt which would only make sense that there would be if, in fact, they were being "above board" ( ha)

They have the usual "must be returned with original packaging" in their return/exchange policy - the delivery dude asked if I wanted rid of the box and considering it's size I just agreed - in retrospect maybe a bad move on my part ... "return" indicates they will issue an in store credit. I'm thinking that maybe taking it back without packaging ( as in the proper "protection" ) may not be the best way to go - the glass panel on plasmas is relatively thin.

I could be wrong, but in my mind the fact that it doesn't state it as being a floor model should nullify their terms to some degree though.

This shit really is not my forte (reasoning with the unreasonable), although that's the route I'm going to have to go ... any reasonably priced lawyers with an SUV [or muscle bound folk w/ truck] for hire ? ... : )

Was delivery/install included with the purchase or did you pay extra for it? If it was included then whatever happened to the packing is THEIR courier's/installer's responsibility not yours and it is also their responsibility to pick it up if you don't want it. Unless of course there is a disclaimer on the back of the invoice that says all return shipping is the responsibility of the customer. Did your delivery also include setup? Did the installer/delivery guy work for the retailer? If so I bet you dollars to donuts he took the box back to the store for the next item......

With or without packaging I'd take it back immediately. Don't wait another minute. If you have to bite $100.00 for the box etc then I'd do it but get it back into that store....

I may be wrong but I believe legally they are bound by law to have it stated on the invoice if the item is a demo or floor model. This is the same as the invoice for a vehicle, if it is used or a demostrator it has to say it on the inovoice else the deal is null and void. Even if you owned the car for 2 months and didn't find it out until you took it in for servicing you still had grounds to return it (there was a recent case that silverman was involved in that was exactly that, a dealer sold a car as a demostrator when it was in fact used....and it didn't say it on the invoice and the customer had put 20,000 kms on it).

As for the glass being fragile, yes it is but it isn't like fine china. I had a 42" shipped from South Carolina wrapped in a shipping blanket in the back of a cube van and it arrived fine. You just have to be careful with it.

True, more recourse with Credit card company. Unfortunately, BBB doesn't carry much weight in Ontario anymore.

Pool, sorry to hear of this. Sounds like tboy may be your muscle.
If getting nowhere with store, try a written complain with customer service.

Simple fact is they sold you a floor model. At that price I would have called them out on it. Tell them you will get a refund. Not and exchange or upgrade at more money, but a full refund. Get a tech. over to your house to see the image burn personally brfore they blame you for it. If you don't have HD programing yet it will work in your benefit. Don't take no for an answer.

Don't hesitate a day longer. Absolutely never buy floor models, especially plasma. You have no idea of the history of that unit. Could be you are not the first customer to be offered that deal, and it's been returned before.

Take it back now!

You will never be happy if you don't. Everytime you sit in front of it, all you will see are the flaws, and you will be pissed that you did not return it.

We're not talking about a new power drill here, we're practically talking about "mans best friend". When you fire that baby up after a long day, you want complete satisfaction and continue to be impressed with the picture each day.

Besides, more and more 1920x1080 displays are coming out, and these blow away the 720 sets in HD picture quality.
