I have 2 computers setup with a router (SMC). My phone changes to machine after 2 rings. As soon as it changes to the machine, i loose connection until machine finishes recording. No problems when just using phone but, why is it disconnecting when phone goes to the machine? Isnt it suppose to stay connected all the time? what do i do?

I had a telephone line problem , anytme the phone would ring I lost connection to sympatico. The technical explanation was " the occupancy level was too high on the telephone line" and that was causing the internet disconection. the line couldnt handle the added telephone conversation (high occupancy) and thus the disconections.
nothing that 6 or 8 hrs on tech support and a repair guy couldnt fix!:D

i'm not losing connection when phone rings or using phone etc. ONLY when it switches to answering machine. I dont think that would be the same problem would it?

I'm hoping this problem can be solved with them stupid sympatico support.
Lot of them just tell you you have to buy this cable or that thing to fix your problem. When really, its something on their end. Happened to me quite a few times.

question: dsl? are you using a filter on the line going to your ans. machine? do you have filters on all lines with phones connect?

yes dsl
i used to have an older machine setup rite next to the computers and same thing happened.

now the filter you guys are talking about are the faceplates that you put on the phone jacks rite?
I believe I only have a filter on the phone in the kitchen. I have another phone which is in the bedroom, which is where the machine is connected.

Before i buy anything, i want to make sure it'll work.
So if i take the fone in the bedroom off and hook the answering machine to the 1 in the kitchen with the filter, you're saying it should work? If that works than that means if i put a filter on the bedroom phone it'll work as well rite?

filter

go ahead and put the machine in the kitchen thru the filter. but, you have already stated that you do not have a filter on the line in the bedroom.

So, go out and buy a line filter from an electronics store. Or, if you still have the box that all of the dsl modem parts came in, you might find a line filter.

good luck.

so i tried hooking up the machine to the phone in the kitchen and it worked. I noticed that the ethernet keeps flashing while i'm talking to the machine, but it didnt disconnect or affect the internet at all. Guess all I need now is another Z-Blocker MicroFilter. wheres the cheapest? walmart?
thanx for the help guys.

most likely you want an inline filter for your answering machine, the zblocker is more designed for wall mout phones.as pictured here http://www.excelsus-tech.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Products.productDetail&productID=1749730
Sympatico normally sends 5 filters with the modem, have a look in the box for a package of filters.FAiling that, probably walmart would have a decent price on them, (around$10) or call sympatico and they'd probably ship you a few n/c

the inline filters look like this http://www.ace-internet.net/Zx2xxSM2_high.jpg, and they plug into the telephone jack , with the device plugged into the filter.

it's fixed

Glad to see that you have fixed your problem.

It really is too bad you didn't have the original box of parts, could have saved yourself the cost of the filter.
