I think you have to switch to Bell. Rogers is "always on" as your router does the "dialing in" so you always have the same IP. Bell assigns your IP when you log in each time. At least I think that is how it works. I would trash Rogers anyway only because Ted is the biggest A-hole ever and he has, bar non, the worst customer service in Canada. I used to have 3 rogers cells and cable ...now I have all Bell who have been 110%.

Yes you can change your IP.

In your routers configuration web page (Linksys 192.168.1.1; D-link 192.168.0.1), there will a status or setup page where you can release the current IP address (DHCP Release). Wait a few minutes then renew the IP address (DHCP renew).

If you get the same IP back, you will need to do another DHCP Release, then go to the Advanced Setup page and look for a Mac Address Clone page. Here you will change the routers MAC address so the cable modem believes a different device (PC or router) is now connected. After you change it, do another DHCP renew.

If you have cable Internet change your Ethernet card. A new one cost about $16.00. And it will give you a new IP Address
That won't help...he has a router. IP addresses are temporarily assigned (bound) to the MAC address of the IP device connected to the cable modem. They automatically renew periodically and normally renew to the same IP address.

You can change IP by releasing the bound IP, waiting a while, then renew and hope you old IP was reassigned, or, convince the Modem that a different device is now attached by changing the MAC address.

With a hub, or just a direct connect by the PC to the modem, you would have to perform the same DHCP release for your NIC. (< ipconfig /release>). You cannot change the NIC MAC, but if you wait a while before renewing (like overnight) it will be assigned a new IP when you run <ipconfig /renew>

not sure about it but i think rogers gives you a static ip ....i believe the ip is assigned to the mac address of the modem
Your IP is represented by a combination of the modem MAC and the CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) MAC (ie: your router or PC NIC MAC)

If you do a name lookup on your public IP (nslookup "IP Address") you will see your CPE MAC in the name.

Do you know how to open router configuration page? If not, what model of router do you have?

No. You are at the mercy of your internet provider. They change customers ip periodicaly, but not often. Your best bet is to go through a proxy server. Also next time don't attract so much attention that they ban you by IP.

This is the truth. I have used my foil hat on many occasions, especially when the Martians leave the room and I feel safer.

Rogers will issue you a new IP and run you through the steps to do it ( as in wheelman's post). They assigned me a new IP recently ( when I complained about my connection being sluggish ).

Yes Rogers uses DHCP and it refreshes every 5 or 7 days. On refresh you may or may not get an ip change. But if you call them and ask for the change it could take a few days as it needs to be escalated to level 2 or 3.

On my Linksys Router it has an option to set the router MAC address to anything you like. I changed it and reset the router and Rogers Modem.. what do you know I had been assigned a NEW IP number. I changed the MAC back to be what it use to be, reset everything, and what do you know I was back on the old IP address... I changed it again to the new MAC and I was back to the new IP number... I then changed the MAC to something not yet used, reset, and I now had a totally new IP number again. So this goes to show you that changing the MAC does seems to get you assigned a new IP.
