I hope some one can help me with this.

I recently formatted and reinstalled Windows XP, Media Center Edition. For the last few weeks the computer's performance has been very sluggish. Particularly after surfing on the net for an hour or so. I regularly do a scan for spyware etc. and clear out the cache regularly.
After rebooting the computer, router and cable modem , the performance goes back to normal.

I am using a P4, 3.20 GHz with 1 GB of RAM. I have SP2 installed.

Any suggestion or advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you done the routine optimization stuff ??
i.e.:

a. Increase yer Virtual mem size to at least 1.5 x real mem

b. relocate Virtual mem to another partition other than the root

c. check the system event viewer for any errors

d. check device manager for any unfound devices

e. check the disk drive policy to enable write caching under device manager

f. move the whole XP kernel into the real mem so that they do not have to be paged out

g. Defrag your drive regularly

These are some of the basic stuff you gotta do ..

You say the machine slows after hour of surfing ??

Maybe limit the amount of memory the browser uses to a finite number as well ..

HTH ..

Cheers !!

That is quite a list of to dos. Thanks for all the suggestions.

mikron15 - I have installed all the latest drivers. I am using NOD32 antivirus. I was using Norton before but it is too heavy on the resources. I have disabled XP and the router firewall.
I am also using Spybot, Webroot Spy Sweeper and Lavasoft Ad-aware.
I did the netstat test, it all seems normal.

Bullwinkle- Thanks but half the things you mentioned are "Greek" to me.
Could you please PM me or post your suggestions in a little bit more detail. How do i carry out a, b, c, d, e and f. I understood g, and i do that regularly.

Do you think additional RAM would help? I have 1 GB now. Would an extra 512 help?

Thank again for your help.
