Does anyone have any information on the wireless broadband network that Rogers is currently installing in many urban centres across Canada?

Apparently subscirbers will be able to surf at speeds equivalent to cable high speed anywhere in these urban centres (the beach, while stuck in traffic, at the park, etc)

I am guessing your talking about the 3G network ? If so, they already started trials in some areas. Most likely by 3rd or 4th quarter it might be rolled out. Mind yah, the bw costs ( $$ /KB) wil be high.

No, the network that is being installed has not yet been announced by Rogers. It will be for laptops, not cell phones. From what I understood, it will make the city a giant hotzone, for subsrcibers.

I recently met a few guys who are installing it in my neighbourhood and was just curious if anyone here may have more details

The wireless broadband project is known as "Inukshuk". It is a goverment initiative with Rogers and Bell sharing transmission infrastructure, but acting as seperate ISP's managing their own channels.

The technology is similiar to having a wireless cablemodem. The transciever is AC powered, like a cable-modem, and connects to your PC by ethernet or USB.
The only difference is there is no cable wire or phone line input.

The transcievers are encoded to operate within a select number of transmission sites, so while it might work at any home in your neighborhood, it may not operate across town. There is no PCMCIA version of transcievers yet.

Market wise, this service could have no immediate thrills for Bell or Rogers in the city. The service has greater use in serving rural areas. But as new transceivers are developed the potential for new services and revenue opportunities will grow.

Wireless Network

There's already free Hot Spots at Starbucks for example throughout the city what's the difference?

Tor Hydro

Saw same article in Globe, didn't realize Wi-Fi the city was in decisive stage.

Love Tor. Hydro. Aggressive in their plans, challenge major biz in their own game. Swallow market shares from Tel coms for years.

It's getting exciting. Bell, Telus, and Rogers banding together for 3G network to counter. Competition is good.

"In Ontario, where smart meters have been mandated, electrical utilities are looking at various telecommunications technologies for retrieving data from people's homes and businesses for time-of-day billing purposes."
It's a great way to pay off the cost of the new meter reading systems. It's suppose to be coming to rest of the GTA as well.
