Was at their new store on College a few saturdays ago and they actually had a bunch of customer service people, some even answering questions. Surprised the hell out of me. I guess they listened to complaints. There are lower prices out there but CC has a pretty good selection of high end stuff at good prices.

If you want mid level or lower end stuff, take a walk around college, spadina to bathurst. (few stores on spadina too) Must be somewhere around 40 stores there.

Try newegg.com and if you need further advice go to the forum called pcmech.

Your friend is right. Don't go for celeron -- lousy performance. For a few bucks more get a intel processor with HT

Have fun

Yea, stay away from Celerons....They are ok if you're just doing spreadsheets, surfing the net, emails etc. but if you get into anything you need processing power for, they blow....

HYperthreading basically makes your processor think it is a dual processor which allows it to run two operations per cycle.

Hyper-threading and Celerons

Hyper-threading only works for applications written to take advantage of it.
It is NOT the same as having dual processors or even close.

I built a gaming system for my son 3 years ago using a Celeron 1.7 Ghz and I'm blown away with the performance it has. He plays on line games like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor and the performance really impresses me. It's the older PIII Celerons and earlier that were dogs.
Unless you're running some really intensive video applications or conversions, I'd have a second look at the newer Celerons. The performance will surprise you.

Well, with all that being said a lot of other factors come into play which will allow a celeron to perfom well. This includes but not limited to: video cards (and the detail settings of the games), amount of memory and type, HDD speeds, system bus speed, TSRs, sound cards, and I would have to say the most IMPORTANT factor would be the quality of your MOBO. Put a celeron into a nice ASUS P4P or better and it will perfom well but for the most part, when you buy a cheap celeron system, that's what you get, a cheap celeron system.

Another determining factor for online gaming with a celeron is your netspeed. A slow net connection will detract even a Prescott 3.0. I also have a friend who plays online and his stepson has my old celeron and he gets better performance than I ever did. Why? His net access is about 25% faster than mine therefore he gets a better ping rate. For whatever reason they have little or no lag on their line.

If you want to test the performance of your son's system: run NFS most wanted with the details set at mid to high. THAT is a true test of a system's power...hell, they have friggin leaves blowing across the road and flocks of birds flying by....

system

His system is a Celeron 1.7 Ghz
Asus P4S8X-X motherboard
1 Gb. Corsair memory (2 X 512) note the motherboard is not capable of running in dual channel mode
40 Gb. 7200 rpm Western Digital HD
Soundblaster Live
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 mb.
Rogers Extreme internet
Minimal TSRs running - anti-virus

He does play Battlefield 2 at 800 x 600.
Please remember I built this system 3 years ago!!!
I'd upgrade the CPU, but the motherboard\BIOS does not support the latest socket 478 Celerons.
Regardless, I can't believe how well the system hauls ass for a 1.7 Ghz Celeron

Yup, you've got a good setup there with pretty good stuff all around. The net access is as expected as well......

You say you built it 3 yrs ago....bet you paid a pretty penny for your components then eh?

I picked up a ASUS (can't remember the model) for a computer I was building for my niece, paid $39.00 for it lol and it was 2 bones 3 yrs ago. It works great for what she uses it for (msn CHAT lol).
