Between a rock and a hard place
There is no black and white here. Fewer of these cases are about oppressive machiavels and deadbeat hoodlums. Ultimately it has to be that they climb out of their financial hole or leave. Landlords enforcing eviction are not carrying out vendettas. Just trying to preserve their investment before they lose it altogether. Tenants in default are, for the most part, honest people in trouble, usually stranded and clinging to their last chance at shelter.

Anyone who has the fortitude to see a family into the street in the dead of winter at their darkest hour of hardship deserves all the money they can earn in the process. Personally I wouldn't be able to touch a dime of it.

Actually collection agencies and bailiffs are constantly searching for people willing and able to get their hands dirty and keep their conscience clean. As long as you have a clean records and a good credit rating, you're in. Try Wilson and Company bailiffs first.

In a very dark place
Two sides toevery story

I will say upfront that I'm speaking from the landlords side although we have all been tenants at one time or another.

I have been a landlord in both the residential and commercial areas. While many of the basis issues like non-payment of rent, violation of lease terms and damage to property etc are common to both areas, it is residential that seems to enjoy the heartstrings tug angle.

We do not know the whole situation in the example Fred cited but look at some of the facts. This couple abused a situation and worked all the angles for as long as they could. While forcing cash flow problems onto the landlord by not paying rent they also caused willfull damage to his property. I too have been a victim of the first and last rent scam, and its aptly worded, they are the first and last cheques you will ever see. When you finally get back the property it is very demoralizing to see what you face in remediation costs.

So lets not let the image of some poor family with a child being evicted in the cold of winter colour the situation. I agree that life is hard for that child with deadbeat parents but that is no more the landlords fault than the fault of a Porsche dealer who doesn't give them a car. Accomodation is a commodity and not a right.

When I was a landlord, I used to fill out the eviction papers the day tennets moved in. I would leave the cause and date blank. Saved me alot of time and trouble.

way out in left field
While financial trouble is the root cause of non payment of rent, don't paint the picture that boo hoo hoo poor them. As we know many people in North America live outside their means falling for the advertisers that you have to have the latest and greatest. It is no one's fault but their own that one falls into financial disarry. Remember: we all have the same oppurtunity to excel and if we choose to ignore oppurtunities that are presented to us, then we have no one to blame but ourselves.

As for honest people falling on hard times, if they are truly hard working honest people most landlords will work with them and cut them some slack. There was a time when I was a renter and became ill for about a year. I had insurance to cover some of the basics but couldn't make all the rent every month. I approached my landlord and explained the situation and they accept 75% rent until I was back on my feet and back to working full time where I paid them all that I owed.

From the info in the example the family depicted is nothing more than deadbeat fuckwads and deserve whatever fate they have put themselves in. It is no one's fault but their own.
