Is there a way to fix scratches on DVDs for ripping and burning?

I like to make copies of movies but sometimes the disk is so scratched up that it goes beyond what rubbing alcohol and a cloth can do. Is there a way to repair those scratches because my burner can't read the disk.

Toothpaste is the answer....

and don't laugh.

There are quite a few ways to remove scratches depending on the severity of scratches.

Once you have tried rubbing alcohol and that does not work. You need to try a very small quantity of toothpaste and very soft cloth, preferable a sof chamois and buff the disk for some time and then wash it off.

The best method is get a buffing wheel - the kind that you get for car polishing. The softest one available is called "Swansdown" - sorry don't know where to get it. But any really soft buffing wheel will do. Use a plastic buffing compund lightly. Or some fine metal polishes like Hyfin work best.

Are you saying that once you burn a movie the disc becomes scratched?
What kind of dvd burner are you using and what kind of dvd discs for that matter are you using?

Jumbo video offers a disc polishing service and there are all kinds of kits you can buy that will remove most surface scratches. Remember tho that the actual disc isn't scratched, it's the coating and depending on how deep the scratch is, you may not be able to remove them.

With all that being said, why wouldn't you be careful with discs? I know you're not the only one who has ruined movies and games because a friend of mine's kid has ruined about 20 PS games but I have about 20 games and about 50 movies and they are all in perfect condition.....I'd say the best way to get out scratches is to not put em there to begin with.....

No these disks are scratched because I am renting them. It's not me or my machine, it's the previous handlers.
