What are you opinion on Vonage ?

A couple friends have been praising it for a while . Just how good are the connections and overall do you really save a lot on long distance calls ?

Thanks in advance.

I like my Primus Talkbroadband

I don't use much long distance, so you can't beat phone service for $19.95

I've had 2 Vonage lines since Oct 05 , 1 of them for my biz at home , the other 1 personal :

How can you beat 39.99/mo for unlimited NA-wide calling per line ?

I used to have Bell bills of abt 600/mo between both lines ....

But there are some drawbacks :
- The voice quality varies ( is excellent only abt 60% of the time)
- Many Can 800 #'s don't work ( bcs all calls get routed thru servers in the US and if the Can 800 # isn't set up to be accessible from the US you're out of luck )
- 911 may not work
- my fax machine can send but doesn't receive and I had 3 different Vonage tech guys tried to help - no luck
- if your internet goes down so does your phone service

All in all verdict : long live tech innovation !

I use Vonage, I have had instances where calls from my Vonage to a cell # were of poor quality and I had difficulty hearing the other party. But this happened only once or twice. From what I understand the quality of Vonage calls depends to some extent on your ISP, more specifically the amount of bandwidth resources the ISP allocates to VOip. So you will find everyone has a slightly different experience with VOip depending on their ISP's policies. Overall, considering the savings ( and the fact I hate Bell) I would highly recommend Vonage despite some minor inconveniences (eg: 911 calls get routed via Vonage, some 800 calls will not work on Vonage ).

I have considered using vonage ( I pay over $150/month for long distance) but am wondering if anyone can listen in on your phonecalls? Especially since it runs off the internet.
If you are on a shared network I guess it's technically possible for someome to listen to your calls. Otherwise not. As for the internet being down, I don't think this happens often but you can always use your cell phone until the connection is repaired.

Thumbs up fpr Vonage

I have had Vonage for more than a year. I have both a 416 number and a US number that ring to the same location (virtual number) all for $30 US a month (US account) Itake the adapter with me when I travel back an forth an it works perfectly. It will go down if you loose the internet conection (never hapened to me) but you can set it up so that if it did, the calls will automaticaly forward to a cell or any other phone. I love the voice mail that sends a notification message by e-mail with a copy of the message attached. I could check my messages on line from anywhere (did it in Asia, should have taken the adapter with me to see if it will work there as well).
Sound quality is as good as my land line, although some calls to cell phones are not always as good. I recommend it highly.

What about Primus TalkBroadband? Anyone has any experience? How does it compare to Vonage in sound quality?

I use AT&T CallVantage and it has been excellent! Good voice quality... reliable... cheap!
