Online games crashing...

hey comp techies..

My Warcraft III Frozen Throne Online games have been abruptly cut short due to my computer crashing midgames. Its been happening almost every second game now. It never used to happen before. But yeah, my computer is obviously and very apparently very slow when it comes to opening folders and opening and shutting down programs such as the Warcraft III TFT game. It takes like at least five whole minutes for the game to shut down after i press the exit game button. I checked my computer's stats and it says I have 256 MB of RAM. And the games crash just after i restart the computer and i dont open any other programs and i make sure no other programs are running at the same time that the game is running - so as to not keep memory from the game while its in operation - but even with no programs running and after restarting the computer - the game still crashes - and its no rare occurence - it happens every second game ....

anyone have experience with this?

P.S And I already did a scan for spyware and had all spyware cleaned out (hopefully)...

I wandered into the radio shack outlet to inquire about this. Asked if they had RAM in stock and how much they cost. How much RAM my computer can have max. Told them about how my computer keeps crashing. The salesperson there was a nice guy and asked what exactly was the problem. I told him how I'm playing this game and my computer crashes unexpectedly in the middle of the game.

He asked what the game was. I told him it was Warcraft III The Frozen Throne and how its a small program compared to the ones on the shelf nowadays (Doom, Half Life 2) with graphics not even half as deep as those games (no shadows and complex lighting).

He said that its not my RAM that will help keep my computer from crashing during the game. It might help a little, but not significantly. He said it was my video card that's the problem. It can't even keep up during the game.

I left confused. My video card cant even keep up with such a simple, basic game as Warcraft III Frozen Throne? And Warcraft isnt that complex in terms of graphics. In fact its quite basic and simple. Not too basic and simple. But still, quite basic and simple.

The video card that is currently installed in my machine is a RADEON SERIES Excalibur 9200 SE. 128 MB DDR. AGP 8X. TV-OUT.

I also have a P4. 256 MB of RAM.

The Warcraft The Frozen Throne game details specification REQUIREMENTS as follows: 8 MB 3D video card.

Though, the game RECOMMENDS: 600 MHz, 256 RAM, 32 MB 3D Video Card.

So, is he right? Is my video card too small to handle Warcraft III The Frozen Throne?

I'm going to go do a virus scan now.

And what are the really nice video cards available out there? That could handle games such as Doom and Half Life 2? Cos I might get half life 2 in a few weeks. But of course, not before I get a new video card. So, what do you guys recommend for a video card if Im going to try and install half life 2 eventually? Or Doom.

And has anyone heard or tried the new dual-link video cards setup? (Two video cards installed, operating and connected together in the machine's motherboard.)

Or has anyone attempted the new motherboard's with duel processors on one motherboard?

Or has anyone attempted a motherboard with duel processors AND duel video cards????

Wow. I think I just had an orgasm :)

If you upgrade your video card, there's not much further you can go without changing to a PCI-express or even a SLI (dual card) motherboard. AGP has almost gone bye-bye.

Your video card is a bit outdated but your biggest problem is RAM. Get some. I'd suggest 1 gig minimum (2 x 512). Odds are, the reason the guy said it was your video card is price. It's a bit over $100 for a gig of RAM, and $250-$1000 for a new graphics card (+$150+ for a new Motherboard + + +).

If you want your computer to be able to handle newer games, it's time for a rebuild.

I've rebuilt my system to a high end SLI motherboard and AMD X2 Dual Core CPU. Installing 2 cards needs a big power supply and some thought about cooling. The biggest problem is looking at the prices of the high end video cards, then realizing your system can handle 2 of them. If you haven't built your own system, most places will offer to install the components you want for a few extra bucks.

Slightly off topic, I've recently gone to the new Canada Computer store on College and they actually have some customer service to go along with their low prices.

Well, he doesn't have to replace his mobo Basketcase. Depending on his processor he can still upgrade to a faster video card with more memory.

Dash your problem also might be overheating. No matter which game your playing, it puts high demand on your processor, memory and video card which, under load, create quite a lot of heat. Case Fans, upgraded processor fans, HDD fans, all cost about $5.00 a piece and take about 5 minutes to install.

Speaking of memory, don't forget your memory also has a speed associated with it. Futureshop and Best Buy don't know didley about memory and good, fast, non-parity, memory costs about $2 - 300.00 for a gig. Anything else is just plain cheapo (and you only get what you pay for).

A 256 + video card can run anywhere from $150 +. I used to run Americas Army with a P4 2.66 with 1 gig of ram and people were blowing me away because I was running about 1 second behind everyone else. I replaced my mobo, processor (3.0 prescott) and got me some kickass memory. Cost me about $400.00 total but now I kill more often than be killed.

It also could be your internet connection. A slow connection will screw up the data transfer and then your processor gets all confussed.

I know it will take a lot of tweaking but start by slowing down and cutting out all options ie: game detail/shadowing/anti aliasing etc. then gradually add options until the crash occurs.

Don't forget your sound card too. A good audigy or better sound card will help. Remember: your processor processing sound bytes too and the better the sound card, the less your processor has to do. I have found that with games such as Need For Speed most wanted. My video is great, with high detail but whenever too much sound is happening, the game stutters.

BTW: just because a game developer says the minimum requirements are, those are the minimum settings/hardware. Even AA says that the game can run on a slower machine but at what cost in detail, enjoyment, crashes?

Video games stress your system to the max. NOTHING other than animation and video editing applications demand so much from your machine. Just remember that.....I use the auto industry as an example all the time because people can relate. Trying to run a recent video game on an average computer is like entering the Indy 500 with an off the shelf Cavalier. YOu can enter, but you ain't ever going to win and you will probably blow the engine trying.......

I have to agree with tboy. Overheating or slow internet connection. Your computer should run that no problem.

Just for fun, do you have any other fairly intense graphic games
you could test? If so and they work, I'd look at the internet
connection.
Have you checked to sse if there is a forum on this game, there
maybe others experincing the same thing.
If you can go into bios and check hardware monitor(if it has it)
and see what temps your running.
Are there any other issues besides this game?

If you "Dash" u r bound to crash

Hi, advice about graphics is good. You may not have to buy a new card, you might want to install up-to-date drivers for it though. If they are the latest, you might want to go one version back.

Also, under display properties, if you go to Settings, click on advanced button, choose troubleshooting tab and then change the acceleration just a wee bit, your system might stop crashing.
