from the Toronto Star today:

"Rogers Cable is now limiting how much bandwidth is dedicated to customers using BitTorrent and other peer-to-peer applications, even for customers who already pay a premium for Rogers "Extreme" high-speed service."

I think it's been mentioned before but is there a way to open a port and get around this?

Port 1720. You will get +400kB/s with Extreme.
Have fun.

Just a reminder: You will have to Port-forward 1720 in your router and firewall.

In your torrent client, router and Windows firewall (if you have it on).
Windows XP and the router have separate firewalls, either turn them both off or port forward.
Either way, you will still have to configure the client and the router.

You can get more details at :
http://www.portforward.com

Bitcomet and Bitlord are used commonly.
Azureus is java based, therefore very heavy on resources.

I have been using port 10000 on Azureus for well over 1 yr now and never had a problem. I have Rogers High-Speed regular service and the fastest I get is 300KB/s.

You guys are lucky. I have Extreme and have not gone over 400. Even with a Newsleecher subscription the fastest has been just over 500.

I have tried Azureus but could not get decent speeds. Had to revert to BitLord. Quite happy with it now.

Port 1720 is the netmeeting port along with 389 and is a huge security risk open to the Net.....
http://grc.com/port_1720.htm

But, even after port-forwarding 1720, it is showing STEALTH status when a Shields-up!! Checking the Most Common and Troublesome Internet Ports test is performed.

Is there a way to change Stealth to Visible (Open)?

well correct me if i am wrong. no matter what port you have open if there are no seeders/peers, and if they have their upload limit set to a small amount then you will never get those speeds. alot of people are choking there upload in hopes of recieving a higher download speed.

You are right bonghitter:) , nice name.

The upload limit is directly propotional to the download speed. If someone has the u/l set at a very low limit, their d/l speed will also be very low.

I think the biggest problem is that after downloading files many of us forget or ignore to upload thus reducing the seeds hence the speed problem.

Apparently, Rogers has decided to throttle all the ports as of a few days ago. I tried Bitlord and even the beta utorrent with encryption using 1720, 1755, nothing works.

I can't get DSL in my area. Grrrrrrrrrr
