If you were getting a new system in the $1000 - $1500 range... what would you get?

I can't decide between DELL & MDG....

I just bought a system and decided to go with dell. It may take a bit longer to receive it, but their warranty is second to none.

OH MY GAWD!!! NEITHER!!!

Seriously... with that amount of money... go a build one yourself... head up to Pacific Mall or something and have them build a super machine... Dell is a volume company so quality isn't as good as it should be, and MDG is just a piece of shit!!! Positive to negative ratio of their service and systems is like 1:100

Canada Computers, PC Gate, Logic Computer House, Tiger Direct, these are much better to go, and a helluva lot more upgradable.

Dell and MDG machines are ok. Non proprietary parts.

Dells after care is not good. A lot of the info they give out over the phone is simply not correct let alone helpful. I have a friend who has one and I'm always on the phone with him sorting out another of his botched attempts at tweaking his system.

I get all my computers from a local shop. If there's a problem..I'm back up and running in no more than 3 hours. In 15 years...I've only had one major problem with systems this way. Oddly enough it was on the first day I bought it. One of the 2 drives installed was bad. It had passed the shops 24 hour test but was just a bad drive. Fixed and replaced in an hour.

Besides..buy local. Those guys are hobbyists too!

I disagree with that, the outsourced dude in India stayed on the phone for a full hour helping me with my PC.

I once tried to fix my daughters Dell PC, which has no sound when playing cd's. I was on the phone with a guy in india (not the same one twice) for more than two hours every night (from 12 to 2 AM ) for 3 weeks. We installed drivers and OS about 100 times, they sent me two replacements sound cards and a replacement motherboard. After 3 weeks I gave up, principles are one thing, but there are limits. We never got it to work.

I tried to talk to marjketing to get some help, but they would not talk to me. And tech support offered me to send me another replacement motherboard, another replacement sound card etc etc.

Yeah fair enough but do you really think you'll get better service from some rinky dink store???
I somehow doubt it, but I could be wrong

 and get AMD as good as the heavily advertised Intel, but it's more word of mouth and does the same, if not better job.

I did not suggest a rinky dink store, but now that you ask, I don't think the support could be any worse than what I received.

If Dell had any sympathy with its customers, they would have replaced the PC when they were unable to fix it. It was under warranty.

speakin of dells, i was helping a friend reinstall everything on her computer.
Called Hell, and got Bob from India, riiight Bob...anyways, they wouldn't tell me the RAM type required or if i were to make a hypothetical purchase, the sales rep. didnt even know what type of RAM it was.
Basically, he/she (forgot who), said, that they only see what capacity was available 512, 1Gb, etc, but now what kind of RAM. So even their sales reps, don't have the info in front of them, talk about good control.
Anyways, i ran a program that scans the entire computer, read the info, but the memory 3rd party (kingston) for a lot cheaper with more capacity and voila, she has a full gig running now.
Fuck Hell and Hell (dell & bell) haha

I don't know if that is a good comparison. A PC has only a dozen or so components, so it should not be that difficult.

I actually had good luck with Dell for many years earlier, bought 50 of them in a little company I had, and never had any problems. But I am not going to give them another chance.
