I live in a very rural area that does not yet have cable or high-speed internet availability. However, I have a wireless card in my laptop computer, and I can pick up a weak signal from a neighboring house that lets me have free high-speed wireless internet access!

The problem is that the signal is weak and unreliable, often going up and down every few minutes, which causes problems with file transfers and downloads. Is there any technology available that will "boost" the signal I am receiving so that it is stronger and more reliable?

Any layman's explanation or advice is appreciated, but keep it simple! LOL

If your neighbour can get highspeed internet service than why can't you? Stop trying to get freebies from your neighbours and pay your own way.

Thanks for your useless reply. I have no idea how he (whoever it is) gets it, it may be a T1 line, it may be satellite. I never ASKED for any freebies, my laptop automatically found a wireless source and locked onto it. Perhaps you are suggesting that I block it because I'm not paying for it?

Depending on your wifi card or computer you can get a pop can and hack it into a amplified antenna or purchase a bigger antenna for your laptop.

His neighbour should've firewalled it or put a WEP/WPA on his router, so you can't blame Muffin (yeesh) for getting and using something that could've been protected.

Or just take a walk outside and sit next to his yard, if you don't have a laptop, build an outdoor workstation for your desktop.

And who knows if those boosters really work... I remember a time when a lotta those cell phone booster circuits were sold everywhere, didn't work a lick.

I think you are asking way too much of poor MM. After all he would have to give up the VIP option at Allure to pay for his surfing. Can you blame him?

So your laptop signal finder 'just' activates on it's own. Likely Bell Sat. T1 has to be run and pricey for non-business.

Thanks for the notice, firewall on router back up.

Muncher, no more suck up my download cap (from ISP light). Can you retype that last character of your password again, I was too busy look at MPA pics?

Good Lord, some of you are very protective of your wireless internet signals.

Yes, anyone with a router should have the common sense to password protect it or firewall it or take whatever protective security measures are reasonably available. But if you dont take those steps, dont get all pissy with me if "your signal" bleeds over onto MY property.

Thanks to the several people who took the time to post or send me useful information on this subject.

You're welcome Mucky, anything for an old friend... but why don't you try to get satellite internet service?

Or ask your neighbour how he gets his?

Yes, MM do a search for "wireless broadband" providers in your area.
I think even if you purchase the antenna your neighbour can lock you out from his network.

Ok to share if you pay half my bill? Guess you're like the U.S. gov, own the airspace up to 1 mile? No worries with sharing as long as you don't post on al-jazee. Just in playful mood, friends with horror stories, in trouble with Bell from being the neighborhood ISP.

Hey mind if I hack into your cable, satalite, telephone, electric or anything else you pay for and I won't? Maybe I can come over while you are out and steal food from your kitchen. After all it is your money not mine

Looks pretty cool but i'm a little suspicious that it won't work as well as they would have you believe. Just my gut feeling though.

what will work, is a device called a wireless repeater. It simply takes weak signals and amplifies them, and re-broadcasts them. There are even some out there with detachable antennas so that they can be located mid way between two points.

The run about a hundred bucks.

There are people out there who intentionally leave their routers open so that people can connect. The idea is that if we all did that, we would be one step closer to always being able to connect to the internet, any where any time.

of course this kind of thing could be abused, but it's an interesting idea.

P.S. i can post some lock down tips for your wirless router if anyone is interested

The other option is you knock on your neighbours door and ask him what internet provider he is using and/or offer to split the bill with him to share his connection ( if that suits both of your needs )

Either way, antenna or wireless repeater, he certainly can take steps to lock you out of his router. There are even counter measures to this but obviously that would not be within the spirt of someone who is intentionally sharing his connection.

1. Futureshop/Bestbuy used to sell a wireless repeaters (desiged to be installed at a midpoint however could work at a high spot in your house) for about $100.

2. High power wireless cards are available. Futureshop/ Bestbuy used to sell the SMC2532W-B card (200mW) plus external connections for high gain antennas with even more range. There's also 300mW and 400mW cards available now. A regular card is about 30mW.

3. Faster speeds have less range. Your card is probably trying to auto adjust to a faster speed, causing it to drop out. You can try locking down the speed on your wireless card to 1 Mbps. It uses a different radio modulation technique to gives you about 3X the range of 5.5 Mbps-54 Mbps. I've used this effectively before.

4. If you share the connection with your neighbor, upgrade him to a MIMO router which has about 10X the range, however you will also need a MIMO card in your PC.

5. As many have sugguested, just ask him who he gets his highspeed from, cause you can also do the same. I think the PUC is offering this service now, you might be picking up their gateway installed on his power pole.
