In the corner
I'm waiting a year or so, then prices will have fallen and experience with all these new technologies will show what works and what doesn't!!

Billboard-sized flat-panel screens once again drew crowds at the Consumer Electronics Show this year, but more telling TV advances took place on a much tinier scale -- in pixels and color saturation

I find it incredible that Samsung and Sharp are now quality names in T.V.'s. Ten years ago they were the Bi-Way specials.

That is the Korean concept. They've done the same thing with Hyundai, Goldstar/LG. These days I would buy a Hyundai over a GM or a Ford car.

If you are looking at big screens and HDTV, you have to know one thing....

You want a screen that natively displays 1920x1080 pixels like the new Sony SXRB models. These TV's will display a true HDTV 1080 line picture without having to downscale the resolution to fit the screen.

You see this effect all the time on your PC when viewing high resolution pictures on a low resolution monitor. When you downscale any picture, it loses sharpness. Select "actual pixel display" and the picture is much clearer and larger.

Most HDTV settop boxes output at 1080 lines. Up to just recently, TV's claimed they can handle 1080 input, but they must downscale it to the screens actual resolution...usually 720.

Go compare the new Sony's SXRB 1920x1080 models with their Grand Wega 1024x768 models, and you will be amazed at what 1 to 1 pixel mapping looks like.

Don't let the salesmen try to fool you, by saying it accepts 1080 inputs. Sure it does, but it does not display it!!!

Prices on these older sets will be dropping fast as more manufactures deliver the 1080 models. So it is your choice.

Acer is making some amazing bigger screen lcd Tv's for a very affordable price, i was contemplating getting it but instead i got myself a Viewsonic Projector with a 120" giant wall mount screen, added Logitech Z5300 Surround sound speakers and got myself an amazing Home theatre for less then 2k.

so many different brands and each brand has it's own features and names for them. i would get a big LCD/plasma/DLP but i don't know what the fuck i'm doing or who to trust. everyone has their own bias.

I can tell you who not to trust. Salesmen! I don't know if they just lie or don't have a clue about the products but the things I've been told and stories I've heard are littered with false info. The only thing to do is research on forums to find out what type of TV is best for you (just like we do here for MP's) then go in and buy what you want. The only thing salemen are good for is doing up your order. Same thing applies to car salesmen. Just shut up and give me the keys so I can take it for a test drive. There's nothing salemen can do to make me buy a product unless it has to do with a drastic price reduction.

Right on... I don't know how many times I've gone to BB or FS and ended up with more customers asking me questions about big screen technology than all the salesmen combined. And usually after the other shoppers have become properly informed they want to upgrade from the set the sale staff was pushing.

http://www.avsforum.com is the best site for researching technologies and reviews.

Like I said earlier....true 1080 line displays (and I mean actual screen resolution, not "supported inputs"), are hear to stay. 720p screens and fake 1080 systems, like "wobulation" will be gone in a couple of years.

It is interesting, that now that the display resolutions have caught up to the broadcast HD standard, what will be the next step...?
