Do you have to inform Sympatico if you plan on setting up a wireless connection? I see on their website that there is an $80 "activation" fee, but you're still using the same DSL that you were using before so can't you just set up the wireless on your own? Granted, you'd need all the hardware but it's still doable right?

I'm told the $80 is so they will support your router/wireless connection, if you don't pay the $80 they wont support you if you have a router, whenever I call them for support I just un-plug the router and tell them no router connected when/if they ask.

I bought a wireless router from Sympatico, and I've loved having the option of working on my laptop in the dining room or on the couch versus sitting at the computer table.

It was a cheap purchase (I think $70.00 ish) and so simple to set up...and I've had no problems in the month or so I've had it.

Excuse me for stepping in...

I have a Mac laptop and would like to make a wireless connection.
I keep reading about Airport Extreme, is this something I need for wireless or do i need a card insert?

Some other Mac Heads will jump in on this one...

My son has the airport..loves it. From what I see of his network there will be the airport wireless router and either a built-in card in your laptop or a PCMIA type card. Mac users tend to really like the airport system. I did read somewhere that the airport is either now or soon to be PC compatible.

Not sure what systeml it uses. If you feel the airport is to expensive, Belkin has a "Pre N" system which I've converted to. Much better signal and easier setup as well.

It's irrelevant to Bell whether you have a wireless connection on your internal home network. You're still sharing the same one internet connection. That said, they won't support anything beyond your Internet connection unless you buy it from them. It doesn't matter to them how you network your home computers. Their support isn't worth shit anyway.

Regardless, I got a call from bell a few weeks ago about a special promotion to upgrade to their Ultra high speed service forever for an extra $5\month and no extra costs. It also came with a free new router that also does wireless for your home network. My speed doubled on the new service to 5 MBPS so you should call them to see if they still have a similar deal.

It depends on which Mac laptop u have and when it was purchased as to whether u need Airport Extreme , regular Airport or a third party card. U will also need a wireless router be it an Airport or any other third party router.

Were you paying the $39.95 rate beforehand?

It really depends...

You have to consider the speeds you want and the price you want to pay.

Speeds - How fast do you want it to go?
You have to keep in mind that the speeds advertised are always "up to" so many megabits per second (mbps). The higher the better. This is especially important when you share the internet on a home network through a wireless router. You may experience connection issues through your wireless network if the speed you subscribe to is not fast enough.

Price - What are you willing to pay?
You can go for some independent internet service providers but they don't give you the level of support you need, when you need it. With bigger providers like Sympatico and Rogers, you can pretty much bank on the fact that you can get in touch with them when you have a problem. However, it goes back to the issue of what is supported and that depends on what you pay for, as mentioned in previous posts.

I had Sympatico for about 2 years and recently the speeds just dropped on me so I switched to Rogers hi-speed internet. It's been working great since. I hope it stays that way. You can actually check the speed of your internet by going to http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest It's a free test but you are limited to the number of tests you do per month. Another site you can visit is http://www.toast.net and click on the Internet Speed Test hyperlink on the top left corner of the page.

My friend recently got Sympatico installed too and cancelled because they could not get it to work with proper speeds 2 weeks after it had been installed. He just changed to Rogers as well. I'll have to see how things go there.

Oh, one final food for thought. You should also consider if there is a download limit. Some friends of mine download a lot of items from the internet and limits can cause you great pains in the pocketbook if you exceed them. Sympatico does not advertise a limit however I think they use the words "responsible usage". Rogers has a download limit depending on the price you pay. The highest speed package they offer provides a 100 gigabyte download limit per month which is pretty substantial unless you have a network of individuals consistently downloading many items. This point is especially important to note if you are going with an independent who may charge for the additional bandwidth usage. I guess that is how they make their money.

I hope this helps. Happy surfing.

If you have either an aiport or airport extreme card in your MAC then you can buy an Aiport Extreme Airport base station as it does support both 802.11B or G traffic. IT can be set up to negotiate the PPoE connection to Sympatico using the account info Bell has provided you. You can also use it in conjuction with an Internet router to provided both hard wired and wireless connections.. it's pretty easy to set up and there are a few best practices you might want to follow with either a pure wireless or hard wired/ wireless hybrid network.

Hope this helps.

Some where in Cyber Space
I have a D-Link 624 wireless router and it works great. It's no different than your standard cable router. Don't go for the scam! Just read ther owners manual and get a wireless router from the same company as your "normal" router.

Using Cogeco as my ISP and o http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest as ny test I get results of 4.1mbps. I am on regular high speed. How does that comare to Ultra High Speed and will there be any noticable difference in speed?

Firefox loads pages on the Internet in a heartbeat and I thought that P2P was based more on the numbers of people seeding and connected. Rarely have I seen DLK rates of more than 200KBs. Will an upgrade help?

Thanks,

For me, I was on Sympatico and I was on their 3.0mbps service however I was only realizing about 1.5 mbps at most, however most of the time less than that. I switched to Rogers' Extreme Internet Service and it works great! I consistently get 5.5 to 6 mbps download speeds when I run the tests periodically.

I'm not sure the details about making a switch from high speed to ultra high speed for Cogeco but I'm sure it would work the same way in that you can try it and it only involves a "flick of the switch" so to speak on Cogeco's end for you to try the new service. I'm sure you're not obligated to stay on it for the entire month if you don't like it. All they would do is pro-rate your bill.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

Cheers.
