I guess by now everyone has seen the ads for the "Home Phone Service" with VOIP, Voice over IP. For all those non-techies - it allows you to get a regular home phone line, dial tone, phone and everthing, but instead of plugging the phone into the wall with Ma Bell, you plug the phone (with an adaptor) to your High Speed Internet modem, and "tada" you have a regular phone line that goes through the internet.
And here's the rub, it only costs about $10-15.00 per month and you can get all those services that you're paying the phone company around $50.00 per month for.
I'm here to tell you "IT WORKS". I just got my VOIP adaptor from Commwave (Not Vonage). Hooked it up in 2 minutes, and I have a regular phone line basic for $10.00 per month.
Here's something else, you can take the adaptor anywhere in the world, plug your adaptor into a high speed internet connection and you have your local phone number anywhere, you can call home or anywhere in your home area as a local call.

Do you get a white pages listing with VOIP numbers?
Don't know, but I don't see why not. You have to remember that local phone service is no longer solely the domain of Ma Bell, Rogers, Primus is in it etc.
You should be able to request a listing.

White Page listing... I hope NOT !! Dont need the telephone solicitations. .. I VOIP with Vonage, have travelled with it, love it.... save me tons of dough on long distance.

Plus amazing features.... someone voice-mails me at home I get an email with a .wav attachment at work < very cool !!!

I CANCELLED my Bell Account.

wish I could

Doing away with Bell and getting VOIP and hi-speed internet and free longdistance sounds so great ... BUT ... I get my hi-speed internet through DSL because cable doesn't run into our area. So, it looks like I'm S.O.L.

Sorry Hot Rod but in fact you can get VOIP with DSL as well, I suspect that would be the case even if Bell supplied the DSL.
The DSL & phone line share the wiring, but I'm pretty sure you don't need and actual phone line to receive DSL (as you know they share the phone wiring).
Call commwave they'll tell you.

yeh BUT

Yes I COULD get VOIP through a DSL connection, but what's the point? The whole idea is to save some money. But if I already have to pay for the phone line with Ma Bell, and then the DSL connection on top of that, what's the point of adding a VOIP line on top of that? If I had cable hi-speed then it would make sense as I would only be paying for one phone service, but with DSL I'd be paying for two.

You're missing the point!

I'm pretty sure you can cancel your phone line with Bell and keep the DSL service. The Bell line alone probably costs you over $40.00 per month.
Then you could VOIP with your old Ma Bell no.

I'll have to check that!

I never knew you could cancel your phone service and get just DSL. I thought you needed the phone line first in order to get a DSL. Why do they ask you for your phone number in order to check if they can hook you up then? If it does indeed work, that may be an answer for me.

Or you could cancel your DSL service with Bell if that's a problem, Rogers Express High Speed is just as good and costs about the same.
VOIp is the wave of the future. If you are already paying for internet access there is no sense in paying the exorbitant fees that traditional phone companies like Bell are charging. How often do you use your home phone really ? For me it averages to less than 4 calls a week. The vast majority of my calls go to my cell. I imagine it's the same for many people. The only reason I keep a home phone is that many companies (such as banks, cc companies)I do business with insist on it.

Compete in terms of what ? What do they offer that you can't get on VOIP ?
The savings aren't huge yet for people who don't use tons of long distance, and VOiP isn't as reliable I've heard in terms of sound quality and electricity blackouts. I'd use it for a second line but like to have better than cellphone quality sound. Maybe I don't know the whole story...

The savings are good because they include calling features. Sound quality on my vonage is definitely superior to a Bell landline phone. If you are experiencing problems it might be because your wiring and/ or equipment is of inferior quality. As for electricity blackouts, well, not only are those rare, but you can always use your cell phone in the event of a blackout.

Does my computer have to be on 24/7. What if I get a virus can I run VOiP thru a modem on my cable internet line bypassing my computer; does it require my computer to be in working order?

Your computer does not have to be turned on. Only your cable internet modem. You can bypass your computer and connect the phone direct to your modem.

La la land
listing

Hello and I have few inquiries.

I am sure some of you may be aware that Bell is not the only one with white/yellow pages listing or phonebook. I know for a fact that Telus has a white/yellow pages phonebook listing.

But does the VOIP's ( vonage, and who ever else) have a listing of your phone number on a book or website?

What if you call on bell customer does your phone number display on their call display system?

Is there a place to find a listing of phone bumbers from and VOIP?

Thanks for you answers.

I am regularly talking with a guy on Vonage in Chicago, I have Bell. The sound quality is definitely not as good listening to him. It may be that the guy using Vonage does not notice the poor quality.
