What drives me nuts

A buddy of mine has been caught a couple times, all excited about the next 'great' game coming out. He's a semi gamer, who watches a commercial and gets all revved up about it.

Here's what drives me nuts...

The commercials RARELY show in-game action. They'll spend about 90% of the visuals on the in-game movies, so that you're seeing an incredible rendering job, but then when it comes to the actual PLAYING screens, it's still the cut down rendered version.

Don't these game makers get it? I don't give a damn about how good their renderings are in the in-game movies and vignettes. Impress me with how it looks when I'm playing, because in all honesty, I'm spending almost ALL of my time with your product PLAYING it, and skipping over those in-game movies.

Sure, show off how good your rendering capabilities are, if you must, but dammit, SHOW me what I'm interested in... the game itself!

Otherwise, submit your application to Pixart, and start working on the next Toy Story movie.

Thats why you wait

for the magazine reviews.
Or watch X-Play on TV to get an unbaised expert review (oh and to watch the hot Morgan Webb talk the talk).

somewhere only we know
That why I always try to rent games before I bye them. To many times I got suckered into bying a game only to have it suck. If its a game I know i am going to like then I just bye it.I also rent because sometimes you cant always trust the reviews you read in magazines and online. They might love a game give it a great review and you think it is horrible, or vice versa.

I always rent just to make sure.

I just watch those two guys in Review on the Run. Tommy and Vic. Those two guys are funny and serious gamers and i trust their reviews. If you don't like them, you can always go to www.gamespot.com and check out the reviews.

Most importantly, you have to know what you like. If you don't like playing strategy games and you saw a commercial for Rome:total war or the new civilazaition (sp?), don't go out and buy it just cause it looked cool on TV.

there are a few sites that are interesting to checkout their points of view gamespot is one that is mentioned others are www.gamesages.com and www.gamepro.com

funny how someone complains about the lack of video game play during commericals i recall seeing a show on G4 where all they did was show commercials for video games from the early 80's era of Atari and Coleco and all ya got was like 5 seconds of the game and the rest was the faces of joy on the kids playing them or some other stupid skit :D

In a house.
Never trust the reviews on Gamespot or IGN, there reviews can be inflated with lovely gifts from the developers. There is only one true way to find out if the game is worth purchasing. "Rent IT!" Thats the only way to truely save yourself from buying a crap game.

Because I now work in the industry I can tell you that every gaming studio puts out a CGI trailer for their game or at the very least shows ingame CGI cutscenes. I think Onimusha 2 had one of the best trailers ever (cost them $1 million) but it was a PS2 game and I knew the ingame was gonna be vastly different. Good news is that gaming consoles are catching up graphic wise. In fact I herd from Sony that the trailer for Motor Storm was done ingame.

That's a banner I made myself. It's Michelle Rodriguez who is currently on the TV show LOST. See, her and another actress were busted recently for drunk n driving. That photo is her police mug shot, you can't tell from my banner but she's totally hammered. Anyhow, I took the photo and made an ad for Tequila Rose as a kinda joke.

F.Y.I. "Sweetness" is what Sawyer calls Lucia on the show. It's all rather witty by me. :p

i will say that is a very clever idea :)

as for gamesages and other sites being bribed, thats not surprising and I think games like any form of art are a matter of taste, a game that one person loves another person may totally despise, take for example the PS2 game Shadow of the Colossus, check out the rave reviews it has been getting everywhere.

so I rent the game to see what the fuss is all about played it for like a couple of hours and hated it!!! the controls were insane and the camera angles left a lot to be desired, and besides the fact you riding around in this beautiful environment where you have nothing to interact with, no other people or species, that to me was totally boring!!!

For PS2 I recommend trying BLACK. Also if you haven't already try Fatal Frame 2 with the lights out.

hmm I have never heard of this Black game for PS2 and is this Fatal Frame anything like Silent Hill, I played 2 or 3 I cant remember and it was so boring, go into a room, get a key, go back upstairs open the door, find a clue, then go back to the other room etc etc etc, although I did play one horror/survival game that I thought was the one of the best games ever that being Resident Evil 4, now thats a game that makes ya nervous :D
